IMO Hoss's character changed the most over the years, instead of being the big, ole, dumb, ox that maybe was envisaged by the PTB.

Dan Blocker honed Hoss into a sensitive, thoughtful person, hand in hand with nature, with no mind to harm a living crittur, unless it was to protect his own family, sometimes even against themselves, or to come to the aid of any defenseless being, human or animal, he became and was the strength of the Ponderosa.
