Wayne Newton was born on April 3 ,1942 in Norfolk Virginia where he spent most of his childhood.
His father was a mechanic and his mother stayed home with their two boys,
Wayne and Jerry. Their parents had Native American roots: on their mother's side, Cherokee; and
on their father's side, Pawhaton.
When Wayne was six years old, he began his singing career. He found his lifelong occupation
after watching Kitty Wells and Hank Williams perform. By the age of ten, the family had to move to Phoenix, Arizona, where the climate was a lot better for Wayne's asthma. In
his new city he performed on a local television station, He even had his own show for awhile.
Before long he and his older brother Jerry began touring with a Grand Ole Opry traveling
show. Wayne taught himself how to play several instruments, including the piano, the
banjo, and the guitar. In their teenage years, they performed together in Las Vegas. Initially hired for two weeks, they were performed for nearly two years.
Bobby Darin helped him get his solo career. He made it to the top 20 with "Danke Schoen" the
following year. In his junior year in high school he was playing at the Fremont Hotel and at
the casino with his brother Jerry.
In the year 1965 he hit the charts with another tempo ballard,
"Red Roses for a Blue Lady".
In the year 1972 he made his last major song called
"Daddy Don't Walk so Fast".
Later in life he dropped off the charts. He enjoyed great success as an entertainer.
For a long time, he was the highest paid actor in Las Vegas. Today he remains a popular
concert performer, and is the best gigs player in the country.
Newton was a supporter of the US military, and he has particapted in numerous USO tours
to entertain the troops.
In the 1980's, NBC News ran several reports claiming Newton had links to organized crime.
It also has been reported that Newton became a part owner of the Aladdin Hotel, the casino
with help from the mob. He is allegedly an associate of two members of the Gambino crime
family. He sued the news network for libel, claiming the false reports and for the
demage they had caused him with his reputation and his business.
Wayne played an evangelist in a 1989 film with James Bond called " License to kill" starring
Timothy Dalton. He was also in a comic film called " The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" with
Andrew Dice Clay the following year. Two years later he showed off his dance moves on a
show called " Dancing with the Stars", completing againist actress Jane Seymour,
and the singer, Marie Osmond.
He experienced some health problems in the time he appeared on the show. He cancelled
