Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1 Reviewer: Sharry Signed

An engrossing read, Patina!  The contrast between the two sets of brothers is extremely striking, and no doubt a major point in the story.  And poor Adam - I had not considered the wrath of a scorpion before, but that would probably be an exquisite form of torture for sure.  I also certainly believed that either of Adam's brothers would have taken out the bad guys at any time in order to save him, 'cause that's how they roll.  Good job.   :)

Author's Response:

Thank you, Sharry! I wanted to explore nature vs nurture and I'm glad to know the contrasts between the sets of brothers showed those differences. Scorpions creep me out (never been stung, thank goodness!) so poor Adam got to have that experience.  The Cartwrights are "all for one and one for all" so the person(s) with evil intentions against one must deal with the rest of the family.

Again, thank you.  I'm pleased to know you enjoyed this story.

I enjoyed your take on Adam's White Buffalo Woman, Patina.  Adam was rarely shown to be so passionately involved with any woman.  His commitment to Ruth after knowing her for such a short time was heartbreaking.  I don't think Adam would totally abandon the whole experience without trying to find his own answers to her disappearance somehow.  (As you suggested.)  Ruth left everyone with a lot of unanswered questions.

Title: Chapter 1: A Mouthful of Regret Reviewer: Sharry Signed

This is an exciting story which lets us see Adam and Joe as I think they really are. Mere words can be inadequate at times when we're trying to communicate with the people we love. Sometimes we get it right, and sometimes things go wrong.  Things went wrong for these two brothers shortly before a traumatic experience almost changed everything.

As mentioned by other readers, I too have a soft spot for Adam and Joe stories.  I also remember reading this particular story when I first discovered Boomers a couple of years ago.  I thought I wrote a review at that time, but it appears I'm mistaken. Perhaps I was too shy back then to say much.  :)

My favorite line might be... Ben knew that Adam and Joseph were more alike than they would admit.

I couldn't agree more with that sentiment.  Ben would know.  Thanks for a fun and rewarding read, Patina.

Title: Chapter 1: The Battle of Wills Begins Reviewer: Sharry Signed

Well - this part of the story is certainly beginning as a true battle of wills.  Adam drew a line in the sand that surprised me as well, although I have to remember how young he was when Marie entered his life. The vantage point is different for him than Hoss.

I can only imagine how Adam felt when his pa came home with not only a new wife, but full of expectations for him to welcome Marie as his new mother.  While Hoss is tickled and agreeable to the idea, Adam is obviously not.  (My favorite line was Adam's response of "I must be" after Marie said to him "You must be Adam.")

It strikes me this might also have been the first time Adam displayed his independence to Ben quite this strongly. Marie handled the situation with equal admiration - I fear it could be a long siege for both of them.  Adam is noticeably pushing Hoss away, too. He appears nothing but determined to make his feelings known to everyone.  I'm going out on a limb and guess there's yet a long way to go for everyone.

Fun story, Patina!  Thank you.

I love the intimacy of your story, Threem.  The conversations between Les and Adam are a reflection of their love.  It allowed me to feel each person's pain, all as a result of one extremely unfortunate kiss.

The kiss was such a small thing in some ways, yet it caused such tremendous hurt for everyone but Regan.  I particularly liked that Adam was apologetic to his wife.  I would expect that from him.  He understood he had hurt her, and he understood he had hurt his brother.  He was humble before both of them.

This was quite the mystery that kept me guessing who/what was behind the fires, what exactly was the motivation behind them, and how it all came about as it did.  The sheer number of fires, or 'burnt spots', seemed well beyond an easy explanation.

I enjoyed the way Dan and Ben both wanted Adam's help as soon as they realized something was wrong - also liked the way Hoss and Adam worked together to tackle problems in general.  They know and understand each other, and can work well together because of it.

Poor Roger's illness and distress was profoundly unfortunate.  He may have been responsible for starting the fires, but his sad childhood, his family's mistreatment of him, and his mental issues were not his fault.

Title: Chapter 1: The Same Road Reviewer: Sharry Signed

Oooohhhh - this was pretty dicey!  I love this sort of stuff, meaning adult situations make people a little uncomfortable at times.  That's real life for sure.  I've often considered what it might have been like to have four fully grown adult men under one roof.  There would have been clashes, and lots of testosterone for sure.  That's not necessarily a bad thing.  :)

I suspect your summation of Adam when he was fourteen was spot on, too.  I think he might have had quite a time 'coming of age', so to speak.  The dichotomy with Marie is a nice undercurrent for take a look at all of that.

Well done, and a thoroughly enjoyable read.  :)

Author's Response:

Thank you for the nice comments. Someone had asked for a story where two C's want the same woman but I hesitated to tackle it because I felt one of them would have to leave the Ponderosa for good should that happen. Then I had this idea. And as for Marie, she would have come into the C's life when Adam was at his most vulnerable--just at the age where puberty kicks in with a vengeance and Marie was quiet the sexual creature.

Thank you for enjoing the story as I agree that the situation can make many readers uncomfortable.  Many people like their Cartwrights perfect and I can't see them that way.

Thank you for the lovely glimpse of a family dinner on the first night of Hanukkah.

I enjoyed the warmth of the scene as Adam joined the Kaufman family for dinner on such a special night.  Despite some unfamiliarity with the proper order of things (guests first) he would have been the perfect dinner guest.  I think he would have been happy to experience the lighting of the candles and the offering of prayers.

And he got to kiss the bride.

Author's Response:

Thank you, Sharry, for reviewing here and in the RC thread. Adam--I supposed--would enjoy learning about another faith's practices as in the episode he was moved by the Kaufman's dinner marking the Sabbath. I wanted to follow-up and for Rebecca to be happy in her choice of husband and to show the strength of her beliefs, And yes, Adam kissed the bride!

Well - this was a little bit sad yet sweet story.  Benjamin had endured even more loss than any of us knew about before his sons were born.

I've never doubted that Ben would have an incredibly close relationship with Adam.  The two of them experienced far too much together to have not forged a solid emotional bond.  Their relationship was a gift to both of them.  Despite the additional heartaches they would both experience in life, they always had each other.

Thank you for the touching glimpse at a few of Adam's younger days.  I greatly enjoyed it.  :)

This is such an achingly beautiful story, Tracy!  What an undertaking!   The multiple layers of emotions between all three brothers and their father feels spot on to me.  I particularly loved the way you brought Adam home, and just when they all needed him the most.

I thought the initial juggling between Adam and Candy was also insightful.  It underscored so well how integral Candy eventually became to the C's, yet no one could truly replace Adam.  Perfect!

Thank you for such a profound and moving story.  It's truly amazing.

Title: Chapter 1: The Deliverance Reviewer: Sharry Signed

Oh my!  Adam was so right.  It's a good thing Joe didn't go along on this trip.  I don't know that he would have survived.

I so enjoy Adam and Hoss stories - something that allows us to have a much closer look at their relationship.  I love eavesdropping on the two of them in their private conversations.  I think the banter you created between the two brothers is perfect in that grown up sort of way.  Adam and Hoss understand each other completely.

Getting into Adam's head is always fascinating, particularly his opening thoughts about Merle.  It wasn't difficult to know right away that he did not think very highly of 'that woman'.  That alone made me want to know more about her.  :)

Admittedly, it was hard seeing Hoss so compromised - meaning that I don't think he typically lost a lot of fights.  Worse yet, when that was behind him, a new heartache awaited him to boot.  Poor man!  It turns out Adam was right all along.  At least Hoss could count on his brother to take care of him.

Enjoyable read.  Thank you.

Author's Response:

I'm glad you enjoyed this story, Sharry. I like writing about Adam and Hoss for some reason; I often wish the Bonanza writers had written more scripts about their dynamic.  I'm really not a fan of the C's sufering such physical pain but I wanted to show just how much Hoss cared for Merle, what he would endure for her, although he would probably suffered equally as much protecting anyone. And Adam is a sarcastic son-of-a-gun so I had to show that. : )   Thank you for reading and for the perceptive review. It's always nice to have such a reader.

Most of us have wondered how Ben endured so much heartbreak.  I guess having sons like Adam gave him the strength to go on after Marie's death.

I wasn't sure what 'Independence' referred to when I first began reading.  Adam clarified that for me in his charming essay.  I think it's fair to say he was something of an expert by then.  Regardless, poor Ben - I still don't know how he did it sometimes.

Patina - I love spooky stories!  I had missed this one before now, but today I've caught up a little bit.

Paschal Randolph is a new character to me, too.  It's quite entertaining to imagine such a man was a close friend of Ben's as well as the Cartwrights engaging such a visiter at the Ponderosa.

Adam demonstrates his own sharp intuition through out the story as he pieces together the clues from Ira's tale.  He notices what everyone else misses.

The story surprised me several times - I wasn't expecting a couple of twists and turns, most notably the final scene.  It reminded me of a morality tale - a lesson for all of us in regard to a sense of good vs evil.  The right side won in the end.

Thank you a fun read.  :)

This was every bit as emotionally charged as I thought it might be.  Truthfully, I don't know how Ben did it, other than he didn't have much choice.

I had noticed the title and the story previously, and feared reading it as I could guess it would make me sad.  It did, but it was worth the read.  I just had to be ready for it.  I felt his fatigue, and saw just enough of his grief...  It was a wonderful new beginning story, Adamant.

My favorite line - "And I suppose that you’ll be as unfathomable as the sea, hiding so much beneath the surface.”  Definitely sounds like Adam.  Thank you.

Author's Response:

Thank you, Sharry, for reading and leaving a review. I never think of this as a sad story but as one in which Ben connects with his infant son, something that people always assume comes naturally but it doesn't always, especially for men. I greatly enjoyed your exploration into Cartwright cookery, gf3.  This is an area I had not thought much about previously.  Thus, the story was a welcome change of pace in reading.

I guess I had assumed people in that time period had probably learned how to cook something or they didn't eat.  People were much more on their own in those days.  Of course, the Cartwrights had Hop Sing, and that was a different set of circumstances.  I have no doubt the Cartwright men missed their cook when he was gone.

Thank you for a gimpse into Adam's foray into French cooking.  It was amusing, and hugely entertaining.  I can well imagine that he would approach cooking quite seriously if he decided to do so.  Good for him and his eventual success.

It's at times heartbreaking to hear Hoss talk about himself and how he feels entirely different from Pa or either of his brothers.  He also sounds wise in his own right, as though he's identified what's most important in life, and what ultimately doesn't matter at all in the long run.

It would have been tough to have been Hoss, and just wanting the woman he loved so much to love him back.  It does sound like he found some clarity at the end, however, and thankfully Adam survived as well.

Title: Chapter 3: Chapter 3 Reviewer: Sharry Signed

It would certainly have been interesting to see the Cartwright brothers inherit a sister.  The three of them would have made someone a trio of wonderful brothers.  Mariette would have been a lucky little girl as a result of Ben and Marie's generosity.

It makes extreme sense that Adam was able to locate and connect with Mariette.  He knew only too well how much it hurts to lose a parent.  It was easy to feel that special kind of love and acceptance at end of  in your story. that comes from a family.  It sounds like Mariette was ultimately able to find peace with the Cartwright family.

And Joe would have been a two year old too cute for words.   :)
