This story was written for a challenge. The characters are Hoss and Adam.
It is autumn as 16-year-old Little Joe and his brothers check on the line shacks. They come across something sad. A submission for the 2018 Autumn At The Ranch Challenge.
This story is a continuation of "Somewhere Along a Trail" in which Hoss Cartwright meets Jack and James Fayette on the Ebbett Trail Pass. In this story, Hoss has returned to visit the Fayette homestead. The homestead itself becomes one of the characters of this story. It is a sanctuary for people who are escaping slavery and racial prejudice. Hoss and Adam become involved in a mystery involving a woman who is trying to reach safety.
The inspiration for this story is Israel Hill, West Virginia, where men and women pursued racial equality pre-Civil War.
Joe's new girl Celina accidentally brings trouble into his life.
A beautiful summer's day becomes a struggle of the spirit as well as the body.
Another good reason to fall in love with Hoss? His good marriage qualities? A dialogue of two minds a bit unorthodox, in the hazy night of advancing years and their effects.
