Bing Russell owned the Portland Mavericks, an independent, Single-A minor league baseball team in Portland, Oregon, that played in the Northwest League from 1973 to 1977.
He founded the team for just $500 as an independent club not affiliated with any Major League Baseball organization, famously filling his roster with older castoffs, underdogs, and players who had been cut by other teams. His son, actor Kurt Russell, played for the team briefly and served as a vice president. The unique story of the Mavericks' independent and rebellious run was chronicled in the 2014 documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball.
