Earl Holliman was born Henry Earl Holliman in Louisiana in 1928. His family was very poor, and when his father died, he and most of his siblings had to be given up for adoption. As a boy, he was interested in acting. He ran away from home to try to get an acting job, and then lied about his age to join the Navy. Upon discovering his real age, the Navy made him go home and wait until he was 18 to join.

After the war Earl went back and studied acting. In 1953 he appeared in his first movie. In 1959 he got his first big TV role, that of Sundance in Hotel de Paree. Earl was in a lot of Westerns and action movies. He is well-known for his role in the TV series Police Woman, in which he played Sergeant Bill Crowley for 90 episodes. Earl won a Golden Globe and a Western Heritage Award and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He continued acting until his retirement in 2000.
