Finally Checking In!

Hi Everyone: After visiting this awesome site, I finally decided to join in mid-March (Friday, the 13th, hmmmmm. . . .). I watched Bonanza growing up and all through High School, although I admit to a certain melancholy after Pernell Roberts left the series, leaving us all bereft of Adam. Well, I guess it's out: Adam is my most favorite character. Followed by Ben. But it's the interrelationships among the four Cartwrights and each of their special personalities that really made the series overall. So how could anyone ever be left out?? Another note: My name is actually "Virginia" (though I go by Gini), and so I liked the fact that the Cartwrights were most closely connected to "Virginia City."

Although born and raised in Massachusetts, when I was in my 30s I got to move to Colorado and had a job that took me traveling all over the West working on different natural resource and environmental issues. So finally I got to see a lot of the areas that as a New Englander had only come to me through television and movie images. After 10 years in Colorado, I moved back to New England, but frequent business trips took me West a lot and I got to live in the Pacific Northwest (Washington State) for six years. I feel much more "Western" now than East Coast, and my dream life would be to live east/west different parts of the year, rather than the north/south that others more tend to do.

Beyond that, let me say that one of the things I've noticed as a devoted Bonanza fan and lover of the history of the American West is how much that series tackled serious parts of western history that you didn't really see addressed in movies or other TV scripts. Although often Pernell Roberts may have been disappointed in the content or writing, it's also true that for that time, Bonanza was very progressive looking -- especially in Ben's environmental ethic ("never cut a tree without planting one to replace it.") in how he treated his land and everything and everyone that lived within it.

I guess this is a really long post, but I thought it was about time I finally introduced myself! Thanks so much for having such a neat place for all of us to exchange ideas . . . and pics!!

It's so great to have you here at Boomers, Gini, and I really enjoyed reading your introduction!

I've spent several summers living in Western states, and love that area of the country, so I envy the time you have spent there and the traveling you have done. I'm also very interested in the history of the Old West.
