Too protective

Does anyone else think Ben took leave of his good common sense when he paid Helen Layton's $5,000 gambling debt and told Adam & Joe to stay quiet about it ? The first time I saw 'The Courtship, I couldn't believe Ben just went quietly to his strongbox, took out the money and gave it to the dealer. By that point in the episode I was so disgusted with Helen I just wanted Ben - or anyone - to let her have it. But being the loving parent he was - a little like a mama bear, I think - he was willing to do just about anything to shield his boy from pain & sorrow.
