This prolific actor, born in White Plains, NY, excelled at playing mean, bad men. Looked on by his peers and fellow actors as being 'the best of the baddies'. His career spanned 34 years. Curiously, his only award, a 1957 Emmy nomination (General Electric Theatre), was for one of the few 'nice guy' roles he took on.
Although he studied drama at Cornell University, he succeeded Franchet Tone as the President of the Dramatic Society. He actually became an actor by default. He had embarked upon a pressure-filled job in advertising. At an early age, after a game of basketball, he suffered a mild heart attack. He was advised to seek a less stressful career and opted for acting.
Tomorrow, U.S. Deputy Marshal Gerald Esquith meets the Cartwrights and, one Cartwright in particular, in this Adam concentric episode.
