Zorro vs Zorro--Episode 2

Post by patina » Fri Apr 06, 2012 11:45 pm

January and I again bring you the black & white vs color comparison of an episode. This time, Episode 2--Zorro's Secret Passage.

Image
The episode begins with a poster announcing a reward for the arrest of Don Ignacio "Nacho" Torres and the capture (dead or alive) of Zorro.

Image
Sgt. Garcia explains the poster to a private who can't read.

Image
The Sgt. tells Monastario the posters have been hung up everywhere around the Pueblo.

Image
Monastario hatches a scheme to make Zorro reveal his identity.

Image
Meanwhile, at the de la Vega hacienda, Diego is getting dressed for the day.

Image
Bernardo is surprised because he didn't see or hear Zorro...I mean Diego, come in the night before. He asks Diego how he got into the room.

Image
Diego shows Bernardo the secret button under the fireplace mantle. When pushed, the button reveals an entrance into a secret passage built under the house. Diego says his grandfather must have built it as a means of escape during Indian raids. Good thing Diego's father, Don Alejandro, doesn't know a thing about this passage!

Image
After taking a tour through the secret passage, Bernardo tries to find his way back in but can't. Diego shows him how to get back in through the thick brush that conveniently covers the entrance/exit.

Image
Diego visits his old friend, Padre Felipe, at the Mission of San Gabriel. The padre is happy to see Diego back home. Diego mentions witnessing the arrest of Don Nacho Torres and the padre says Nacho is under the church's protection.

Image
Diego visits with Nacho and assures the man he'll let his wife and daughter know he's okay.

Image
Nacho's daughter, Elena, is relieved to hear that her father is all right even though Diego says he can't reveal his whereabouts.

Image
Diego returns home and is surprised to see...

Image
...Monastario.

Image
The commandante has a replica of the costume worn by Zorro and has been traveling to the haciendas, making men try it on. He's arrived at the de la Vega hacienda because he believes he knows Zorro's identity. Diego demands that he be allowed to prove he's Zorro. Monastario obliges. When Diego can't figure out how to get into the cape, Monastario suggests Diego demonstrate his skill with a sword.

Image
Diego botches that, too, making him the least likely Zorro in the pueblo.

Image
On Monastario's orders, Sgt. Garcia arrests de la Vega vaquero Benito Avilla. Benito is the prime suspect because he's about the same size as Monastario, is an excellent horseman, and his whereabouts were unknown the night Don Ignacio Torres was freed from jail by Zorro. Benito insists he's not Zorro.

Image
Monastario insists that Benito try on the Zorro costume. When asked where he was the night Zorro freed Don Ignacio, Benito refuses to reveal his whereabouts. When pressed, he says he was training a horse for an upcoming race. Pepito, a young Indian boy employed at the de la Vega hacienda, says he saw Benito walking in the moonlight with Elena Torres that night. This amuses Monastario as he doesn't believe a high-born senorita such as Elena would consent to be courted by a peasant such as Benito.

Image
Diego demands to know what will happen to Benito. Monastario says he'll check Benito's alibi by taking his prisoner to the Torres hacienda.

Image
As soon as Monastario leaves, Diego rushes to his room to transform into Zorro.

Image
Meanwhile, at the Torres hacienda, Elena admits that she and Benito were together the night her father was freed from jail by Zorro. Monastario doesn't believe her and demands that Benito demonstrate his skill with a sword.

Image
Diego can't allow someone else to bear the blame for Don Nacho's prison escape. As Zorro, he arrives at the Torres hacienda to stop Monastario from jailing or possibly killing an innocent man.

Image
Monastario has bested Benito and injured the man when his attention is caught by....

Image
...Zorro. The distraction provided by Zorro dueling Monastario allows Elena and Benito to escape.

Image
Zorro defeats Monastario by breaking the Commandante's sword.

Image
Zorro then leads Monastario and his lancers on a merry chase.

Image
Monastario and his men arrive at the de la Vega hacienda and demand Diego to come outside. Bernardo nearly panics as Diego has not yet arrived home. While Monastario is shouting for Diego, Bernardo is relieved when the secret doorway opens. He helps Diego into a robe but quickly remembers Diego still has his sword at his side. Diego hands over the sword and goes out onto the balconey to speak with Monastario.

Image
The Commandante demands to know if Zorro is being harbored at the de la Vega hacienda and Diego assures Monastario that there are no criminals on the grounds. Monastario and his men leave. All is well with the world---until the next episode!

Here's a blooper from the end of this episode. When Diego returns to the hacienda through the secret passage while Monastario is outside, Diego is clearly wearing the black Zorro shirt; Bernardo helps Diego into a robe to cover the Zorro outfit. However, when Diego steps outside to speak with Monastario, he's suddenly wearing a white shirt with lace cuffs under his robe.

Image

It also looks as if Guy Williams is wearing his watch when the robe is over the Zorro outfit. I wonder if that was caught in editing and they had to reshoot this scene. For some reason, everyone must have forgotten that Diego was supposed to be wearing the robe over the Zorro costume, not one of the "civilian" shirts.
