Ben arrives back from the Edwards' ranch to find Adam waiting.



Adam: I was a little worried about you.

Ben: That's mighty thoughtful of you Adam but I have a feeling I'm old enough to take care of myself.

Adam: I uh, ran into some trouble over at the Edwards place.

Ben: What sort of trouble?

Adam: Tom took a shot at me.

Ben: Oh, I can't believe that.

Adam: Neither could I. Went up to the ranch to tell him that we'd finished with the mill and he and that hired hand of his were glassy-eyed drunk.

Ben: What started it? What brought it on?

Adam: I don't know. Tom had some wild idea about you and Joyce being off someplace together and he was making threats about killing you if you didn't stay away from her.

Where you going?

Ben: Right back to that house as fast as I can make it. No one touches Joyce.

Adam: Pa?

Ben: What?

Adam: Want me to go with you?

Ben: No, you stay here. I'll handle this alone.

Adam: Pa. Tom's suspicion about you and Joyce. It isn't true is it?

Ben: Suppose it were Adam. How would you feel about it?

Adam: I'd say if there ever was a chance, she couldn't do any better. I'd be happy for both of you.

Ben: Thank you for that, Adam.
