I just finished watching this episode. It has some nice Joe and Adam moments in it. I like seeing those. Yes, the judge's wife was a sweetheart. I'm glad Lila finally decided for herself that she needed to go to Virginia City to get justice. It's a good episode.

Oh and I just realized that Andrew Duggan played John Walton in "The Homecoming" - the Christmas movie that preceded "The Waltons" TV Series. I was trying to figure out why he looked so familiar. Then I finally remembered where I had seen him before. I watch "The Homecoming" just about every Christmas.
"Like father like sons." Echoed by Little Joe in "Springtime"
"Now I know that we are only half brothers, but we are brothers." Adam in "The Hayburner"

I do love all the little brotherly moments in this. The main plot makes me uncomfortable; the judge hiding his lust under the guise of moral fervor is disgusting. Sarah is rather naively adoring of her husband, but she has a beautiful soul and really loves him for what noble qualities he has. She wants to see him become a better man through learning and admitting his weakness, not reject him for it. I think that proves her the "better man," so to speak.

The plot reminds me of the opera "Thais." In that story, a very harsh, self-righteous monk sets out to condemn a harlot in hopes of saving her soul. By the end of the story, she has turned her heart humbly to God and he has abandoned his faith, consumed with desire for her. Very similar to the judge and Lila.
Joe: Hey, where's the Plato of the Ponderosa this morning?
Ben: If you're referring to your brother Adam, he left on TIME.

This is not one of my favorite eps, tho' I do like the Adam/Joe moments. The judge was a real jerk, and just his character alone was enough to make me not really want this ep more than once.

His wife was more than understanding too. Don't know if I would be.

I agree. The Judge was not a nice man but his wife was a sweetie. I do love the Adam/Joe moments. :grin

I don't particularly care for this episode but it incorporates one of the basic Freudian concepts -- reaction formation. Since the judge likes loose women, something he won't even acknowledge to himself, he attempts to absolve his lust and "save" the bargirl. That plot point has been used in literature many, many times. The biggest problem I have with the judge's wife taking him back is that the man is essentially the same -- he likes bargirls, loose women (and I assume the sex that he hopes would go with it) and that aspect of his psychological make-up won't change - he still likes that type of woman. But, I suppose, if his wife is willing to cater to his basic desires and needs, their marriage could be saved. Not a pleasant thought. :puke

I loved the Adam/Joe moments. That was what I liked about this episode. What I hated was how the judge returns to his wife and says help me, she smiles and everything is alright in the world. I wished she would have made him work for her forgiveness. I know it's only an hour show but he got off too easy.

I agree. She should have made that sniveling snake grovel at her feet! I do love the Adam/Joe moments and I wish that saloon gal hiding in Joe's wagon would have removed that stupid feather thingy from her hair! :mad
