I just saw this episode. Considering the episode is about Hoss and near death and blood clots, it was one of the most uncomfortable episodes I've ever watched. It's just too close to reality.

Shanklin shot Hoss, basically for no reason. He also was threatening to shoot Jamie and later had Joe beat up but then he ended up saving Hoss's life when the incompetent Dr. couldn't do it. It was hard to watch at times since Hoss was gravely injured. :sob

It is somewhat unsettling that the episode aired 13th February 1972 three months to the day 13th May 1972 when that dearest of men was taken.

A bizarre episode, IMO.

The similarity to the real-life circumstance of Dan's death has nothing to do with the writing of the episode, though I agree that it is hard to set the two apart when watching "Shanklin."

How Shanklin could be so evil and threatening one moment and save a man's life the next makes little sense. And the doctor's behavior is not consistent with the usual temperament/stability under pressure of a surgeon or doctor of the era.

It makes sense to me because Shanklin is an egoist -- narcissistic; he knows he can do a better job than the doctor so he does. What a wonderful, multi-faceted character! The actor is wonderful and I've neve seen him before or since this episode.

And Bosardus is played by Rance Howard---Ron and Clint Howard's father.

Edited in: I pulled up Cioffi on IMDb and I realized I had seen him--many, many times. He played Frank Masucci-- a mobster-- on L&O and is gunned down outside a restaurant. He was even on TJMD as a police sergeant. And he had a lengthy tenure on Days of our Lives -- not that I watched it. I was surprised at how lengthy his list of appearances was.
We never really grow up; we just learn how to act in public--anonymous
