Saw this one for the first time (in memory). Though it was somewhat predictable, it certainly had its moments.

I'm not sure if I enjoyed the episode for the episode itself or just because it was a "new" Bonanza for me. :grin

Apparently, this episode was supposed to be included in the 1968 - 1969 season but NBC held it back till the 1970 - 1971 run, thinking it was too violent, particularly after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr and Robert F Kennedy earlier in 1968.

No explanation was made of why and how Candy was with the Cartwrights after a hiatus.

Jay Jones, who played one of the guards (the good looking one!) was at the 2014 convention. He said the dogs were really scary; no one knew how to handle them.

This episode was on MeTV the other day, and I'd forgotten how good it was. Very clever how Ben figured out how to break Joe's chains. But I thought Joe twisting his ankle during his escape was a bit much... come ON, Joe!

I enjoyed the Adam remembrance. :grin (Ben is worried about Joe getting away but Hoss says "Me and Adam couldn't catch him no how!")

What a horrible desperate situation to be in a place where really one man took the law into his own greedy hands. I loved how "the Judge" thought that guard could bet Hoss and how Hoss just loved the idea of whipping that guard. like it was said above it was great to hear reference to Adam and really Joe twisting his ankle, but brilliant idea on switching the shirts

As Colin mentioned above, Michael wrote this and it had already been acted out and directed but was shelved after the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King,Jr. It was quite a scary episode having the Cartwrights and Candy being kept as slave labor. The dogs were trained to act mean and many on the set were actually afraid of them. :yes
