This was the first episode Michael directed by himself. Both Lorne and David [Candy] have said this is their favorite episode. It was very well written and directed.

This episode is another one that should have been a two-parter. This type of torture is difficult - if not impossible - to recover from. Not to mention that Candy, in desperation, tried to end it and take Ben with him! I wish they'd dealt with that.

I think this is one of the best episodes in the entire series--beautiful acting by David Canary and Lorne Greene.

To see Ben and Candy locked together in that hole is painful. I would imagine after all that time, Ben and Candy found out much about each other and came out closer--since they didn't come out detesting each other. Since Candy left home because of his domineering father, I would imagine, if there had ben time to explore it, that Ben took over that position.

But I always wonder where their latrine was in that hole?

I haven't seen this in quite awhile, but it sounds like one I should see again soon. (Puts on list...)

Did Michael write as well as direct this one? Have y'all noticed how emotionally charged Michael's scripts tend to be? He really liked to go for the meat of a situation, didn't he? He was so good at it, I always wondered why some of the other writers didn't do the same. He was on to something there, and it would seem more like what Mr. Dortort preferred anyway to showcase family structure and relationships. :ben :candy

According to Michael's sister, Michael used to make up stories starting when he was 6yrs old. He was a very lonely boy and usually made up stories of families who all loved each other or where he was a hero, rescuing his family. He was a beginner writer as a child.

Hummm... I would say it showed in everything he did once he left home as a young adult. Bonanza was probably a Godsend for him then, and exactly what he would have needed to springboard his life from. Seems like it was just meant to be. :grin
