A Little Joe episode, though the other Cartwrights all pitch into the story. Ben is good in his scenes with Joe as the two share some deep conversation about responsibility as to whether it is Joe or Johnny Chapman (Guy Stockwell) who is to blame for the latter's change in character. Joe feels that he, Joe, is responsible, but it is only at the episode's end that he comes to realize that Ben was correct.

Adam and Hoss also appear. They have a couple of quiet, subdued moments in which they look after Joe in that they keep at a distance, but are ready to pounce should their little brother find himself in serious difficulty; it's little things like this that make Bonanza so appealing to me.

The pistol training scenes with Joe and Johnny--filmed outdoors in the countryside reminiscent of the rugged desert territory seen in John Wayne's El Dorado (1967)--are excellent, showing the easygoing warmth and camaraderie between Johnny and Joe as the latter instructs him on how to use a gun.

Stockwell-as-Chapman gives an excellent performance, making his odd-to-me performance many years later in the S2 Magnum, P.I. episode, "The Taking of Dick McWilliams", an anomaly in his long career. Stockwell exudes charm and does a fine job of showing the transformation from scared cowhand to cold, confident gunman.

Valerie Allen, who plays saloon girl Olive, looks (distractedly imo) like a cross between a young Jo Ann Pflug and Ava Gardner, and there's nothing wrong with that!

My Episode Rating: 7/10

Valerie, as Olive, was very pretty. Joe was trying to be a friend to Johnny but he turned against Joe and everyone else. He forgot Joe was the one who taught him to use a gun and drew on him anyway. :shoot1

Those "Joe teaching Johnny to shoot" scenes were effective in illustrating their bond. This is no easy feat, especially when one remembers that the Cartwrights have so many friends whom we only see in one episode; let's just say that chemistry levels vary. Landon and Guy Stockwell, however, gave an excellent effort to convey their characters' friendship.

The episode ending is also satisfying, as it could have ended quite badly for Johnny and Olive. Director John Florea's choice of shot for that final scene was nice, too. Florea is not a director whose name I recall being on many episodes, so I'll have to see what other episodes he's done.

Shame on me: John Florea "only" directed a dozen episodes, and "only" two noteworthy ones: "Twilight Town" and a little obscurity called "Hoss and the Leprechauns"! The man was adept at handling disparate stories!

Great to see you, JB!

This is a fantastic episode! It’s like watching a train wreck. Joe thought teaching Johnny to shoot would give his friend confidence; Joe never imagined his friend would put his newly-learned skill to such use.
