I think it goes way back to when they were children; Adam was handsome and must have always gotten the girl and here, he's kissing Regan. I can't blame Hoss--it's sibling rivalry run amuck.

I always want to groan when Adam reaches out and pulls Regan toward him. I mean, really! And then she sidles up to him and kisses him and he almost...almost holds her. But I do love the scene when Amelia laughs at Regan because she's met her match--a man she can't control. I also love that Adam, as Betty Davis said in the movie, "Of Human Bondage" when she says that after Leslie Howard kisses her, "I wipe my mouth!" wipes his mouth and then looks at his palm as if it contains something nasty.

And Adam quickly knows Hoss is aware of the kiss and does seem to antagonize Hoss a bit. He does get a bit more than he has coming. But even had he tried to explain, Hoss wouldn't have believed him.

I agree that it is a case of Hoss finally feeling as if he has something that many - not his family - but many, told he or implied to him that he'd never ever have -- a beautiful woman who says she wants him. I think Hoss also believed he'd never have a special someone, let alone a beautiful one.

I do wonder if Hoss felt as if Regan was "his Marie". Ben came home with a beautiful, fancy-dressed, elegant wife - Marie - when Hoss may have been at his most impressionable age. And now, here's Regan?

The fight itself, IMO, is very well played. Honestly, I think it could have gone on a little longer, and so could the scene when Joe and Ben burst in.

Adamant - I think you're right. I felt like groaning as well when Adam allowed all of that to happen with Regan. I wanted to throttle him myself, but I sure couldn't do the kind of damage Hoss did. Maybe he was trying to prove his point, but I wish he'd done it differently.

And the big man who normally has nothing but compassion for almost everyone and everything? I suspect he might have had more for his brother tucked deep down inside of himself somewhere even under the circumstances. If he would have allowed himself to reach down far enough, I'm going to say Adam meant more to Hoss than the girl, but maybe he just couldn't get in touch with any of those feelings at that moment. :ranch

Este episódio é um dos meus favoritos. É mágica a sintonia entre os dois atores, Pernell e Dan. Os segundos que antecedem a briga (a surra que Adam levou, na verdade), mostram uma cena perfeita, com ótimas interpretações. Impossível não se emocionar com o olhar torturado de Adam, ao descobrir que seu irmão viu-o beijando a vadia...

I think that when any of the Cartwright boys were in love, reason flew out of the window. Hoss, in this episode, battering Adam, his best friend, as well as his brother, without really giving Adam the chance to explain (although I do think Adam enjoyed that kiss just a bit more than he tried to pretend he did).
Then we have Adam in The Savage, threatening to take on his whole family if they tried to stop him searching for Ruth.
And Joe, drawing a gun on his father, when he falls for Amy in Trucker Strip
Not a favourite ep of mine, although I do like the scene when Joe is mending harness and Ben tells him to put his feet on the floor (he has them on the chair)

It's a strong episode but a very dark one and shocking to see one Cartwright attack another so violently. It made me think of the contrasting experiences these two brothers have with women. It must have been frustrating for Hoss to constantly see his handsome brother receive so much female attention while he struggled. He even talked about how little brother Joe tried to give him tips for wooing women. On the other hand, Adam's attractiveness causes him to frequently receive unwanted advances from women and sometimes brings him into conflict with other men, including his own brothers. He also hasn't had any better luck finding true love. I always had the impression that Regan's little speech about not wanting just be seen as a possession or a prize truly resonated with Adam.

However, the ending of the episode is unsatisfying for me. I think Hoss got off a little too easily. Attacking Adam as violently as he did was really dangerous, whatever the provocation. He even grabbed Ben roughly at one point. But all they do at the end is blame it all on Regan in a way that struck as a little misogynistic.

Outstanding performances by both Pernell and Dan. For someone who didn't have much experience or training as Pernell, Dan really held his own.

A classic slut-shaming episode circa 1963. :mad Regan was ostracized for being exactly what men like Adam want and pay for (he knew of her infamous reputation in San Fran; don't tell me he didn't occasionally partake in such manly privileges) but she wasn't good enough to marry. The ole whore/Madonna syndrome.

See, I didn't get that impression-that Adam thought she "wasn't good enough to marry", in the respect that she had a promiscuous reputation. I thought his main concern was what was behind the promiscuous reputation: that she was misleading Hoss because she didn't really love him & she wouldn't ultimately be happy with him (thus making him unhappy, too) once she caught him. A case of continually wanting what she didn't have and then not wanting it once she had it because it failed to live up to her expectations.

I don't think "slut shaming" entered into it with Adam. I didn't see Regan as much a prostitute or lady of the evening, but more a woman who frequently targeted men as the center of her own fantasies & blamed the men when they didn't live up to them (and possibly developed fantasies around married men who couldn't fail to fall short).

That was my impression as well... Adam paid a pretty high price to find out for sure, but he was also right. (Hoss eventually knew it, too.)

And that was some right hook Hoss threw at him! Middle brother was no doubt incredibly strong. Yowzers!
