On the DVD there is a wonderful commentary by Andy Klyde....he states they did a poll of all the Bonanza fans at the convention and also an online poll from all over the world. The fans voted this episode The Hayburner as their all time favorite of the entire Bonanza series.

I would say this is in my top 5 of truly great performances by the actors. As Mr. klyde talks about the charisma of these actors coming through.

This episode was written by Alex Sharp who was a stunt man on Bonanza and he knew these actors and these characters extremely well. Intimately. He liked all the actors but was especially fond of Pernell. And Pernell said of Alex Sharp..."we need more scripts from the stunt man because he gives me good things to do." "He gives me lots of zingers."

The story and the dialog were superb!!

There was a rhythem and certain tempo in this episode, and in my view, not one beat was missed.

They should have won an Emmy for this.

I watched that episode at least five times. It's so hard. Pernell was right about the lines. He seemed to have the best ones.
Wait a minute, wait a minute. What you're saying is that at your age, you don't know the difference between a girl and a horse?

This is also among my favorites, not only because it was very well written but also because my favorites are episodes with all of the brothers in it.There some really funny moments with the brothers and all three did this really well. :laughing

This is a very good brothers episode. I enjoy episodes that focus on the three brothers.

I think this is the only time when Adam drinks out of the saucer, pouring the coffee in at first. :ohmy Very bad manners! :yes :razz
That depends.
My mom used to always make coffee (and if she had time something like a cake -- she could do a cinnamon one quick as biscuits) for company. She always included a saucer with the cups, because she'd grown up in a house where, if the coffee's too hot and you're pressed for time, you pour it in the saucer to cool and sip from the side of the dish. It's only bad manners if you make a slurping noise. The saucer also lets you pour or spoon your coffee over your cake, of course!

Never heard of that; we use saucers only for the cups and the spoons ... But ok, then PR may have been used to this, too. :grin (You always learn new things here!)

I love the look on Adam's face as Cora is "cackling" on, as Enos put it. :laughing

It used to be sort of a custom; I think it's dying out these days, I'm sad to say.

This is in my top 5 favorite episodes. I think Alex Sharp wrote the characters and lines so well because he knew them. Too many scripts were a bit off because they had writers that did not know the Cartwrights especially the first few years. When TV shows changed to having teams of writers those type of things changed. Everyone has mentioned all the great parts already so I can only be repetitive here, but this episode has to be the funniest since there are so many funny lines and situations! :adam :hoss :joe :ben :lol

You were able to narrow your favorites down to five?! Lucky you! That would so hard for me! There are so many good ones, I don't think I'd be able to do that! :laughing
