This is such a good episode. A fired up and angry Little Joe is almost as good as a suffering Little Joe. He demonstrates his wonderful physicality in the barber shop fight scene - that gets replayed several times whenever I watch this episode. I would like to have seen bad guy Perry Lopez in more eps. He was a really watchable actor - even sans hair!

I agree 100%, I think it would have been great if Perry Lopez had appeared in episodes. Maybe alternating between playing bad guys and good guys, Similar to Gregory Walcott.

I love seeing Joe getting angry when others aren't being treated fairly. I also love how he took an interest in Paco.

Something about this episode puts me off. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of Joe/Pa moments that make the watching worthwhile. I guess I just don't care to see someone get away with murder or our Little Joe being vindictive.

I know what you mean, it's definitely not good that Duke Miller gets away with the murder. But, in a way, Joe's punishment of shaving all his hair off is probably ten times worse for him - as he's so vain - then having a noose around his neck! He has to put up with the ridicule of the town's folk and the embarrassment and (for him) the shame. It's a brilliant way of giving him his just desserts. Plus, Joe sees the error of his ways through the guidance of his Pa and realises to kill him is to stick two fingers up to the law.

I would love to have seen Duke Miller as a recurring bad guy - he was just so mean! And quite easy on the eye too...

I would have loved to see many of these talented stars in returning roles but it was not to be.

Since Joe identifies with the Paco whose father is murdered, I can understand Joe's fury and frustrated anger. It doesn't seem unusual behavior at all, especially since Joe could flare up in a second. It also seems realistic that Duke Miller would get away with murder considering the circumstances. What I find rewarding is the rest of Virginia City is upset as well and they all participate in some way or another in bringing about Duke's punishment. It's a throwback to public stockades and "shunning."

There's also a chain--Ben helps Joe deal with the incident and the failure of the justice system and then Joe passes that wisdom along to Paco.
We never really grow up; we just learn how to act in public--anonymous
