I like this episode in general. It's interesting in that it changes from a "Hoss episode" to an "Adam episode."

One thing that bothers me about the episode, though: In the saloon, Olsen saw that Hoss had some of the stolen money. So everyone said it proved Hoss took a bribe from Jamie Wren. Jamie was caught right after the murder so he wouldn't have had the time to spend any of the money, so it must have been a bribe?

This made NO sense to me. First, assuming it was a bribe. How would Jamie Wren know Hoss would be on the jury and be able to get the money to him? And anyone who knew Hoss knew he wouldn't take a bribe anyway; he was too honest (and he didn't need the money anyway!).

But secondly - and to me this was obvious - if Jamie Wren didn't have the time to spend the money, and he wasn't caught with the money, and the money was in circulation, then someone else must have stolen it! How this was overlooked is beyond me!

I agree, the whole bribe thing made no sense. And I also have to agree that this episode is good!! It happens to be one of my top episodes, as it's a good part Hoss, and a good part Adam.

I too like this episode and because Adam helps Hoss with his doubts and stumbles across the truth.

Powerful episode, but I especially liked the scene where Adam comes in and the first thing he blurts out isn't "Hi, Pa" but rather, directed at Hoss: "What kind of a mess have you gotten yourself into this time?"
Ben, oh classic Ben, helping him with his coat sees his wrapped hand and comes back with: "What kind of a mess have you gotten yourself into?"
He admits that he "had to fatten a few faces" because of Hoss, even adding to his father that the fight was "not of his choosing."

I thought it was so nice and brotherly of Adam to help Hoss out of the mess he was in. He was taking a lot of abuse that he didn't deserve, just for standing up for the innocent.
Wait a minute, wait a minute. What you're saying is that at your age, you don't know the difference between a girl and a horse?

In The Jury there is a fine scene between Hoss and Adam in the Ponderosa living room where Hoss is worrying about his decision in the jury room. Meanwhile, Adam is tending to his injured punching hand which he had injured while engaging in some fisticuffs with the Virginia City trash talkers who had spoken ill of Hoss.

Adam and Hoss have a reserved, quiet but nonetheless deep bond that perhaps gets overlooked. I believe that Adam brings out the more serious, thoughtful side of Hoss--not that the others don't, of course, because each pairing has its own "flavor."

However, I think that Adam brings out the thoughtful, serious side of Hoss more than any other character, as opposed to when dramatic or dangerous situations bring out that aspect.

The Adam-Hoss relationship might be subtler than the other Cartwrights' interactions but I'm always impressed by any scene between Pernell and Dan; such scenes were far too infrequent, and I wish we'd had more of them.

I agree completely. I like the low-key interactions in Adam-and-Hoss scenes. One on one, Adam usually takes Hoss seriously and doesn't just blow him off as a younger brother. And Hoss understands Adam well, better than Ben or Joe does, in my opinion. He intuits some of the things Adam doesn't say out loud. They're like a couple of trees that have grown side by side for years, breathing the same air and drinking from the same soil. They don't have to have dramatic discussions about things. They just know each other, respect each other, and know they've got each other's backs.

My favorite line - I may have never read a more perfect description of the relationship between Adam and Hoss.

Thank you for that. :thumbup :adam :hoss
