Inspired by recent reading here on the website, I just watched The Gift for the first time again in - I dunno, maybe 50 years?

Slowly but surely the memories began to come back to me as I watched. I could remember the huge white horse, Little Joe riding frantically across the desert in wide open gear, and Adam yelling at Hoss to get back - "You're too big of a target!"

They did a good job with that one. Bravo fellas!

A lot of emotion and action in this episode. I loved the beginning, when Ben is planning to go find Joe and Adam and Hoss insist on going along. Whatever happens, they're in it together. I love when Joe is captured and Ben steps in and says "that's my son!" That emotional ending between Ben and Joe is one of the best!

I've just finished watching this for the second time. It really is a stonkingly good episode.

I couldn't work out though whether Sam Wolfe shot the horse on purpose or whether he was actually aiming at Joe. He didn't seem particularly bothered that the animal he'd been chasing across the desert, because he wanted it for himself, was dead.

Great reunion at the end with tearful Joe and Ben. And Adam in his black leather vest is always a good thing in my view. :yes

Definitely a good one but I often wonder why they decided to give him a white horse?

I've just watched this again - hadn't realised I'd only watched it in August - and it really is a great episode. What I picked up on this time around was how fantastic it looked. It really made a difference when the show was filmed outside, and the desert (research tells me they filmed at Red Rock Canyon in the Mojave Desert) makes this episode look extra special.

And this is one of those episodes where the ending lives up to, and surpasses, all expectations. Ben finding injured Joe, Joe's emotional outpouring about the white horse: "I wanted to give him to you as a gift". And Ben's response which makes you want to curl up and hug yourself: "I have my gift son". Awwwwwww, it's just the best ending... :sob

I can still remember snatches of watching The Gift when I was a child. It made quite an impression on me, and probably most of TV land at the time. I remember the race across the desert on the white horse, and of course, the ending. It's on my list of favorite episodes for sure.

No one did it better than Bonanza in those days. I heard someone say just recently that there are no families on TV any more. :thumbup

One of my most memorable moments from the 2009 Convention is watching this ep with a room full of Joegals. Their triumphant whoops when Ben's shadow falls over Sam Wolfe was incredible. I admit I got caught up in the excitement.

The scenery in this ep, especially when Joe is racing the white horse in the canyon, is part of the reason I enjoy this ep so much. Also, young Joe shows a maturity that seems lacking in other early eps.

Shame Adam had to put his shirt on. :grin

Agree, the scenes filmed outside were always something special.
