I was wondering if Adam would have fallen for that "Let's step to the end of the bar" routine and fallen through the trap door.

I love to speculate on the small changes that would occur in this episode had Ben's backstory of a life at sea already been set.
I don't get ya. What do you mean?

In the 2nd season episode, Elizabeth, My Love, Ben is a sailor (rank unknown) on his father-in-law's ship. In the episode San Francisco, it is never mentioned that Ben had been at sea. Had San Francisco after Elizabeth, My Love, I think the story would have incorporated Ben's life "back east."

I always believed Ben was a merchant seaman under Stoddard, as first mate. But besides that, Ben would still know, as ellie suggested, about the ways men were shanghaied and impressed into service and would have been far more cautious about setting men loose, especially Hoss with his inherent trust in others, without warnings about the waterfront. And the nefarious names of the characters should be enough to warn anyone with any sense that they were up to no good!

But we are to suspend our disbelief to enjoy this amusing episode. And Ben does get to make-out in the alleyway and we see a shirtless Hoss!

Yup. Very true. I believe Ben's rank as first mate is mentioned in later episodes. I would have thought he'd have a higher rank, but that's just me.

First mate is second only to the captain. I double-checked to make certain I was correct in my surmise and this is from Yahoo Answers; it was the most concise:

First Mate is the person serving 2nd in command of the vessel. The modern Navy does have First Mates onboard USNS (Military Sealift) vessels. First Mate is a civilian term referring to the person who handles the operation of the vessel and the administration of the personnel. First Mates are Quartermasters through training and may either be directly responsible for duties of the (on smaller ships) or on large ships there may be an officer below the First Mate referred to as the Quartermaster.

Hard to believe Gilligan had the same title. :yes

The first mate and his Skipper too
will do their very best,
to make the others comfortable
in their tropic island nest.

Gilligan's Island always reminds me of an experience I had in the Caribbean.

I was getting on a small boat for a shore excursion when the guide announced we'd be leaving shortly 'on a three hour tour'. Everyone in my age group looked up in alarm, then relaxed and laughed. My kids didn't get it. But we had no problems at all during the tour. :grin
