General Plot of The High Chaparral

The Cannon family runs the High Chaparral Ranch in the Arizona Territory in the 1870s. Check out another western by David Dortort.

You are welcome, Barb! That's a good question about what DD learned from BZ, and then applied to HC; I would love to talk to him about that!

Somehow - I have no idea why (or rather, why not) - I never saw "The High Chaparral." Never; not even one single episode.

I am intrigued, however, by the idea of David Dortort creating another show whose foundation was "family." I would love to have seen Big John/Blue for myself. Maybe Mr. D thought the Cartwrights were "too perfect" and wanted to introduce more conflict in order to explore how that plays out in the family relationship ...?

I think I enjoyed Bonanza more. I enjoyed the family loyalty on HC but there were not enough episodes that varied much.

Several episodes of High Chaparral have been uploaded to YouTube. These were recorded off TV but at least the commercials have been removed. The pilot episode is one of the eps that's been uploaded.

Thanks for the information, patina!

The family dynamics were VERY different in HC than in Bonanza, pony, but I really enjoyed that!

This is an old thread, but I just read it:-) I began watching High Chaparral in the 70s, when it was shown in Boston, along with Bonanza, on Saturday afternoons. Naturally, I was interested in seeing Mr. D's other western series. I never really compared it to Bonanza, with the exception that John Cannon was such a different personality (as a father) than Ben Cartwright was. But that was exactly what Mr. D wanted from everything I ever read.

The pilot of Chaparral was excellent. I loved how it introduced each character and showed how the ranch was established. While I understood that John Cannon was who he was, he wasn't easy to take to heart. But Buck, right from the start, I just adored him. Even more, I adored his relationship with Blue, which was the reason I kept watching the show. The other characters, including Manolito and Victoria were interesting characters. But I did continue watching it because of Buck and Blue. First and second seasons, IMO, were the best. Third was only okay for me, and the fourth season--with Blue gone--just held no meaning for me.

Not Bonanza (but then again, nothing comes even close, and all else pales against it;-) but I did enjoy the early years of The High Chaparral:-)

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, Carol; I thought The High Chaparral was the better of the two shows!

Well, I certainly understand since I'm partial to shows created by David Dortort:-) I met a women who I think was the president of The High Chaparral fan club, at the Autry Center last month. Did you know the official HC convention in Arizona is upcoming this week?

I didn't find out about that until early in September, and tried to sign up but they were at capacity. Sigh! This weekend will be tough, thinking about what I am missing out on!
