Memphis Film Festival 2012

The Cannon family runs the High Chaparral Ranch in the Arizona Territory in the 1870s. Check out another western by David Dortort.

Memphis Film Festival 2012

Post by praterfarms1 » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:42 pm

Sorry this has taken me so long. I've had all kinds of techincal issues from broken camera cables to slow internet connections. Anyway, better late than never I guess.

A few weeks ago I attended The Memphis Film Festival. There were many, many guest stars. They were, as our cowboys always are, gracious and friendly. I didn't manage to get pictures with everyone, (just not enough time and money :lol ) but I did manage to get a picture with the three Bonanza Alumni's that were there, plus a couple more I'm sure you all will recognize.

Since Henry Darrows was one of the major stars at the Festival, Jan suggested I post my pictures here.

I'll start with Mr. Darrows

Image

Of course you remember him on High Chaparral

Image

He attended with his wife and happily posed for pictures and signed autographs. He is still a very viberant man with that same brilliant smile and a sharp wit. He talked a lot about the Chaparral on the panel, but when there wasn't a crowd at his table I was able to get him to talk to me about Bonanza. He remembers filming Amigo and had a few stories to tell.

Mr. Hugh O'Brien

As Wyatt Earp

Mr. O'Brien attended the festival with his wife as well. He was a big draw, so I didn't get to talk with him much, but he smiled and signed autographs and always had something nice to say to the fans as they passed by.

Ed Faulkner

Image

(Some how I managed not to get his autograph. I guess I was too star struck to think straight. :lol )

Mr. Faulkner and his wife were so very vibrant and friendly. He appeared in six movies with John Wayne and had some very funny stories to tell about life on the set with the Duke.

Charles Briles

Image

He was a regular on the first season of Big Valley before he joined the army.

Image

He attended with his two sons and all three Briles men were wonderful gentlemen. In addition to being on The Big Valley, Mr. Briles appeared in two Bonanza's, The Medal and Kingdom of Fear. The still is from Kingdom of Fear. He was a very funny man and had some side splitting stories to tell. I really enjoyed him.

Darby Hinton

Image

Darby played Isreal Boone on Daniel Boone

Image

Darby is still acting out in CA, mostly on stage. He pretty much grew up on Daniel Boone and said that he really enjoys the excitement of live stage productions in contrast to a weekly TV show.

Johnny and Bobby Crawford

Image

Johnny was Chuck Conner's son, Mark, on the rifleman while his brother Bobby was a regular on Laramie

Image

Image

Both the Crawford boys were super nice. Johnny is a conductor and has his own big band dance music CD out and Bobby still works in the industry, just behind the scenes. He works with distribution companies getting some of the old shows remastered and out on DVD.

Johnny Western and Rex Allen, Jr. were our Saturday night entertainment. Johnny toured with Johnny Cash for 30 years and wrote many songs with him, including one of the sets of lyrics to the Bonanza theme. (Not the ones the boys sing in Rose for Lotta.) Of course Rex Allen, Jr. is the son of the singing cowboy Rex Allen, but he is a marvelous entertainer in his own right, with many top country hits in the 70's to his credit.

It was a great film festival. It had a little different feel than the Bonanza things I have gone too, but that was only because they were covering so many different shows instead of focusing one. They have already begun to plan next years event, with a few guest stars already commited. If you are interested you can check it out by searching Memphis Film Festival. I am going to try to go back!
