Guy Williams as Will Cartwright

:ranch I noticed no one has posted to this Forum in quite a long time. I just wanted to say that there is or used to be a website devoted to Guy Williams started by his wife and daughter. I don't have it anymore but it might come up if you google it.

Beyond that, I have always found it interesting that while I so adored Guy Williams as Zorro, I absolutely could not abide the character of Will Cartwright. I don't know whether it was because I saw Guy Williams as the proposed replacement for Pernell Roberts and my loyalty to Pernell made it impossible for me to relate to him in this role. Or whether it was because as a character he was so disloyal to Adam Cartwright as his cousin stealing away his fiancee. In the final analysis, it was good riddance for me when Will Cartwright/Guy Williams rode off in the sunset with the infamous Laura.

But it was a shortlived celebration, since Pernell wound up leaving anyway, and the following year began the misery of only three Cartwrights riding up in the opening credits. :sad :sob

Guy Williams was so perfect as Zorro -- and handsome, and gallant, and as good in that role as Pernell was as Adam. But OMG, Bonanza did not work for him -- AT ALL!!!

At any rate, whether this revives this topic or not, thought I'd add my two cents worth.

I'm glad you posted in this forum, Ponderosa Dreamer! I want to do more in it, but just haven't had time lately. Hopefully I can get back to it soon!

Personally, I loved Guy as Will. While Pernell is my favorite actor, Guy is my second favorite actor, so I thought it was fantastic to have my two favorites on the same show!

I knew that Pernell wanted to leave, and although I didn't want him to go, if he was going to go anyway, I would have been happier about Guy becoming a regular at that time than anyone else. And I didn't want Adam to marry Laura, so I was glad someone took her away (although I didn't want Will to be married to her, either, LOL)! But Will was going to give her up for Adam, which I thought was very noble. And Adam didn't really mind in the end, since he realized that he was more in love with the idea of having a family than he was in love with Laura.

I do understand why some people didn't like the character, but I would have been happy if Pernell could have stayed, and Guy could have become a regular, too!

:ranch Ya know, Pine, as I read through your comments what I realize is that it really was more about not being able to deal with Pernell leaving and any moves that were being made to replace him -- I was about 16 at the time, so this was major teenage trauma for me! :lol

I also think the switch from Zorro to Will Cartwright was a huge leap. I didn't want to see the refined, swashbuckling Zorro as an American cowboy -- even though I loved American cowboys. They were two separate worlds and I wanted to keep them that way.

The one thing I can wholeheartedly endorse, though, from my present standpoint is that I would have prefered Will worked in differently to Bonanza like perhaps AFTER Pernell left, in a manner more like Candy was. Also I would have preferred him to either Candy or later Jamie. I know some of the Candy episodes are very good and he develops a real affection and respect for the Cartwrights, but it was just never the same for me once Adam left. And I dealt better with it when it was just Ben, Hoss and Joe, because then I could pretend as someone else on the forum has said that Adam was just somewhere on business and not really gone.

Candy and Jamie just emphasized to me that Adam was gone and sorta replaced, and then Hoss was gone too. :sob And Dan Blocker WAS really gone, which made it really awful for everyone. :sob

That makes a lot of sense, PD! I was 13 at the time, just starting to go through puberty, so it was tough on me emotionally, too!

I can understand this, but at the same time I had really missed seeing Guy once Zorro was canceled, so I just thought it was great to have him on a show again. And the leap to him playing a cowboy wasn't that hard for me. What was really difficult was seeing him in outer space later in Lost In Space (and married with children); that really took some getting used to!

I agree with that, even though I liked Candy. I would have still liked Will to be a Cartwright, though.

I still remember hearing the news of Dan's death, and I agree that it was really difficult to realize that he was truly gone (but at least he lives in re-runs)!

:ranch Hey, Pine and any other Zorro/Guy Williams fans!! I finally have had a chance to see the Bonanza episodes with Guy Williams in them for the first time since I originally saw them. I've revised my thinking a bit as a result. I don't have time to develop my thoughts on this right now, but I will as soon as I can.

For you and for any other Guy Williams lovers out there, I found the following Youtube link for his original screen test for Lost in Space. He certainly was what they called in those days "a hunk!!" :drool :laughing Very interesting:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YjbUKoQBps

By the way, he doesn't appear to like answering stupid or repetitive questions. Who does that remind you of? :adam perhaps?

In my opinion, they (PR and GW) both definitely have what these days is referred to as "swagga!!" Even when sitting down!! :cool1 :cool1

Enjoy!!

PD

Greetings!
I have a question as I am confused. It is about why GW didn't continue on Bonanza. One place that I read Mr. Dortort states that Pernell decided to stay on one more year than he originally thought he would and therefore GW could not be hired at the time.
Another place I read said that there was a lot of "jealousy" from the other cast members especially Michael Landon. GW would have been just too much competition. GW had the potential to be a strong presence and that appeared to "threaten" the others.
We may never know what really happened as we weren't there.
I often find striking contradictions from one reporter to another and from one interview to another even with the same actor. Makes me think that much of the information out there is made up just to get readers to read magazines and get people to view the show.
What do you think?

It would have been nice to have Will on the show after Adam left. I think he could have had a family since the show didn't want to the main Cartwrights married. It would be been nice to see extended family stick around for more than one episode.

Liane, I read the same reports that you read, and I agree that we will never know for sure why Guy did not stay on Bonanza. Maybe it was a combination of several of the things we read about. I wish he had stayed, although I love him most as Zorro! :zorro

I will for-ever be totally grateful to Will Cartwright for one reason... he got rid of that dumb Laura. I never did like Adam with any girl I'm too jealous..... but Laura' I really really could not stomach her.She was all wrong for Adam in so many ways. So for me I was so happy to see Will ride off with Laura.
Now I may be the only one who feels this way but I rather have Adam leave then to have to watch him married to Laura.Seeing her day in and day out with Adam would have driving me nuts as it is I have a hard time watching those episodes that she is in.
So thank you, thank you , thank you Will Cartwright.......
