The Sea Horse
The Sea Horse is a drama written by Edward J. Moore in 1974 and it premiered Off-Broadway in the same year with great success. David Canary played the role of Harry Bales at 'A Contemporary Theater' in Seattle in 1978.
'The scene of the play is a West Coast waterfront bar named The Sea Horse, owned by the hefty, no‐nonsense Gertrude Blum. The love affair between her and Harry Bales, an ordinary seaman, is good‐natured and ribald, based on sex and without an exchange of confidences.
Before the play begins, neither knows, or cares, much about the life of the other. By the end of the play these two lonely strays have discovered each other's vulnerabilities (she is afraid of trusting anyone, he is afraid of being laughed at) and have inched toward understanding.'

Also in 1978 he played the role of Iago in a production of Shakespeare's Othello at the Heitman Theater in Stamford.
'David Canary's Iago, on the other hand, is a ranter. He plays the part emotionally, dropping to his knees for impassioned soliloquies, weeping and clowning hectically, Iago does dominate the play, in a way, but it should be by will and intelligence. He is a gadfly organizing the bull's charge. Mr. Canary tries to be both gadfly and bull at once. There are times when Othello appears to be his subordinate, rather than his general.'
* sounds like David was already preparing for the Adam Chandler role he took on 3 years later.
