According to A Journey Remember, Ben and Inger gave Hoss both names, Eric after Inger's father and Hoss at Gunnar's request. Ben told Adam that they would see which one stuck.

I just read that Hoss Cartwright was actually named Eric Haas Cartwright, "Haas" being a Swedish name that sort of morphed into the nickname "Hoss." Please. I do know that's not true--I've seen the two Inger-eps, and I know Uncle Gunnar was called Hoss by a tipsy pal ...

That first pic: "Look at this face! How can you say no?" And Ben says, "I can't!"
