Re: Episode 203 - THE DEBT

I agree that The Debt is indeed an odd episode, especially for a season opener. It's all the more odd with it being the first episode of Bonanza's Brave New World without ol' Lean-O in the cast (though he is mentioned). Tommy Sands was a pretty good actor. He was especially good as a nightclub singe...

Re: Episode 254 - BLACK FRIDAY

Four years and someone wants to discuss Black Friday ...finally!!! For my money, this is season 8's best episode. Great performances, atmosphere, and a "nobody wins" ending that's as bleak as anything any show ever did, especially in a show from the 1960s. James Davidson (Cole Berry) and Robert Phil...

Re: Episode 251 - PONDEROSA EXPLOSION

Alas, a very, very silly episode........but on the other hand we can see that the producers wanted writers to alternate among heavy drama, pure comedy, romance, and morals. Between Ponderosa Explosion --which first aired New Year's Day 1967--and the previous episode, the warm and sentimental A Chri...

Re: Episode 114 - THE JURY

I too like this episode and because Adam helps Hoss with his doubts and stumbles across the truth. In The Jury there is a fine scene between Hoss and Adam in the Ponderosa living room where Hoss is worrying about his decision in the jury room. Meanwhile, Adam is tending to his injured punching hand...

Re: The Wild Wild West.

I have the entire WIld WIld West series on DVD. Does it show that fall on the DVD? Yes. There's a cut in the film, but not before you hear the sickening *SMACK* of poor Robert Conrad hitting the concrete floor below. :sob It's truly horrendous, and all the more when you know that was "The Scene" in...

Re: Episode 172 - THANKS FOR EVERYTHING FRIEND

The first four episodes of Bonanza season 6 were solo missions for each Cartwright family member. Thanks for Everything, Friend is Adam's adventure. It's been stated elsewhere online that Rory Calhoun's Tom Wilson character was a nod to the title character in the "modern western" movie, Hud (1963), ...

Re: Episode 171 - THE WILD ONE

A Hoss episode. Years ago, when I still had cable TV, I did not like "The Wild One." Mostly because it seemed like it had a choppy narrative, and I thought TVLand--in its infinite wisdom--had cut out scenes. Watching it now, uncut on those glorious DVDs, the episode is not choppy, but it's still not...

Re: Episode 169 - INVENTION OF A GUNFIGHTER

Shame on me: John Florea "only" directed a dozen episodes, and "only" two noteworthy ones: "Twilight Town" and a little obscurity called "Hoss and the Leprechauns"! The man was adept at handling disparate stories!

Re: Episode 170 - THE HOSTAGE

A Ben episode in which he plays the 3:10 to Yuma (1957) card, making The Hostage an entry in the sub-genre of "Psychological Western", though it doesn't get deep into what makes the kidnappers tick, psychologically speaking. Lorne Greene does a fine job here, as we get to see him in a decidedly un-p...

Re: Episode 169 - INVENTION OF A GUNFIGHTER

Those "Joe teaching Johnny to shoot" scenes were effective in illustrating their bond. This is no easy feat, especially when one remembers that the Cartwrights have so many friends whom we only see in one episode; let's just say that chemistry levels vary. Landon and Guy Stockwell, however, gave an ...
