Alas, a very, very silly episode........but on the other hand we can see that the producers wanted writers to alternate among heavy drama, pure comedy, romance, and morals. I guess this episode was on the far edge of pure comedy Here are three men managing a huge business operation, and for several months their main focus is raising rabbits to make some money. Considering they are multimillionaires, it's really weird. Then to repay the $150 Ben decides to deduct from their "wages" for THREE months, which would amount to $75 for each son, meaning that they earned a straight salary of only $25 a month, which as I recall from Bonanza and The Virginian, the salary of an ordinary ranch hand of $1 a day.

You are correct that Ponderosa Explosion is a very silly episode. The Ponderosa raises cattle that are sent to market, but they can't kill the cute little bunnies. :shrug
However, it's still hilarious to see Joe stuck in that cage. This episode is for laughs only ... and it succeeds very well. :ha

I love how they get attached to the little bunnies!

And Hoss's line to Joe - "How many have you slain?" always cracks me up! (Along with him calling Joe "a fiend".)

Good point. Don't they ever get a bit attached to other animals, or only rabbits?!

Hoss and Joe at their very best comedy! This is definitely another of my many favorites. I love when Hoss puts Joe in the cage! You're not skinning my rabbits!

A fun, silly episode. I'll paraphrase Ben Cartwright: "I don't understand how two otherwise reasonable, intelligent young men could be so stupid."

Little Joe caged by Hoss :lol

You hit upon one of those Bonanza inconsistencies that's been needling me: Joe and Hoss' constant harebrained (see what I did there? :winking ) money-making schemes, after watching them in previous episodes dropping hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars in cash without batting an eyelash. This family is hardly cash-starved.

Which brings me to another annoyance: Ben acting like $150 is a lot of money to pay for a horse but in "Horse of a Different Hue" he is easily coerced into paying $5,000 (and then another $5,000 on top of that!) into a bet. Men and their manly bets! :no

This is a really fun episode. I love when Hop Sing serves 3 of their rabbits for dinner and later tries to sneak in the barn, cleaver in hand, to grab some more. Ben's poor horse is afraid of rabbits!
