Yup. I cried ... even though I knew it was coming ... and I know mental illness pretty much doesn't work that way ... I still cried.

This is a well acted and written episode. PR does a superb job of acting, with many different emotions being touched on.We see tears running down his cheeks. One of the few times Adam does so. It does seem too convenient at the end that Ross is back to normal after being shot and dying.

This episode got to me a lot when I was a kid. As I saw it for the first time as a child, I had a child's perspective of the confusion. The scene I remember most vividly that long ago was watching the lady being repeatedly hit while she cried out Adam's name. I couldn't figure it out at the time. Adam wasn't hitting her, was he? I was terrified.

I watched until the end - until I understood well enough that Adam was not responsible for whatever had gone wrong. Eventually I learned that Adam was still a good guy which was all that mattered to me at the time. It was gut wrenching. :thud

The first scene is very provocative. We don't know what is going on.

Only that a woman, badly beaten, has admitted to seeing Adam Cartwright. Yikes!!

I love the very last scene as well.

Adam is sitting alone on the porch. Outside and away from his family. Grieving and maybe brooding about things.

Hoss comes out and sits down next to him. I just love Hoss in this scene.

Adam starts to open up to Hoss. Talks about Ross a little. But not looking at Hoss. No eye contact.

Hoss tells Adam that Ross didn't die a stranger then. What comforting words from his brother.

Adam finally turns his head and looks at Hoss. Hoss smiles a little and pats Adam on the back.

They both get up and walk back into the house. Hoss' arm around Adam.

Hoss knew how to 'reach' Adam. Hoss was like a life preserver for Adam. Just in case he went out into the deep too far.

Just my take...
"You're a good man, Adam. You're very kind, thoughtful, considerate.
Gonna tell my people, Paiutes, you're our friend." *Toy soldier*

That last scene with Hoss reaching out to comfort Adam is very touching, surely one of their best moments together. Adam is really put through a wringer in this one, being forced to kill a good friend. The scene where Adam holds Ross' hand as he is dying is a wonderful piece of acting on PR's part.
