Ricardo was born in Mexico City in 1920. His parents were Castilian Spanish immigrants. Ricardo moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and began acting classes. Moving back to Mexico, he was in a number of films there. He eventually came to the notice of MGM and began making films with them. Throughout his career, Ricardo continually fought for a better representation of Latin American people in Hollywood. Too often he, and other Latino actors, were only cast as bandits, gigolos, and other stereotyped characters. Ricardo eventually helped found an organization called "Nosotros," which was a theatre company designed to help Latino actors.
