He was born Robert H. Hurwitz in New York City in 1911. Robert began his acting career in the Yiddish Art Theatre and Broadway, playing Lord Hastings in Shakespeare's "Richard III," among other things. In 1949 he began acting in TV shows and movies. He tended to play heavies and was talented at playing roles of different ethnicities. One of his most famous roles is that of Dr. Augustus J. Broden in Mirage (1965), which starred Gregory Peck.
